Getting Started

01

Install from Autodesk App Store

Download and install Bnotes directly from the Autodesk App Store. The installation is automatic and takes less than a minute. Compatible with Revit 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026, and 2027.

02

Set Your Keynote File in Revit

Before using Bnotes, you need to tell Revit which keynote file to use. This is crucial for the plugin to work correctly.

Revit: Annotate tab → Keynote dropdown → Keynoting Settings → Browse → Select your .txt file → OK
☁ Using Autodesk Forma / BIM 360? Your keynote file may be hosted in the cloud. Bnotes automatically detects and resolves cloud-hosted files via Desktop Connector. If keynote tags show ? after opening a project, click the ⟳ Refresh button in Bnotes to re-sync.
03

Activate Your License

On first launch, Bnotes will show the activation dialog. Enter your license key and email, or start a free 30-day trial.

No key yet? Click "Start Free Trial" → Enter name + email → Activate instantly
04

Open Bnotes

After installation, find the Bnotes panel in the Revit ribbon. Click the Keynote Manager button to open the plugin.

Revit ribbon: Bnotes panel → Keynote Manager
05

Start Managing Keynotes

The plugin will automatically load your keynote file and display it with color-coded usage indicators. You're ready to manage your keynotes!

Use the Search box to jump to any keynote by number or text, and the Expand All / Collapse All tabs next to it to open or tidy up the whole tree — handy on large keynote files with thousands of entries.

A small ? Help button at the bottom-right of the plugin opens this guide in your browser, and your license expiry date is shown next to it so you always know how much trial time remains.

Visual Usage Indicators

The most powerful feature of Bnotes is its visual indicators that show you at a glance which keynotes are actually being used in your project.

02.1
Blue Numbers Currently used in project
03.2
Red Numbers Not used (safe to delete)

👁️ See What's Used

Blue keynote numbers indicate which keynotes are actually placed in your Revit model. This lets you quickly identify active keynotes.

🗑️ Safe to Delete

Red keynote numbers show unused keynotes. You can confidently delete these to clean up your keynote library without affecting your project.

📊 Usage Statistics

The status bar shows exact counts: "Loaded 3571 keynotes (1 used, 3570 unused)". Know your library at a glance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which versions of Revit does Bnotes support?

Bnotes supports Revit 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026, and 2027. Revit 2022/2023/2024 run on .NET Framework 4.8, Revit 2025/2026 run on .NET 8, and Revit 2027 runs on .NET 10 — the installer ships a per-version Bnotes.dll so the correct runtime is used automatically. The plugin is built on pyRevit with an IronPython runtime and works on Windows 10 and 11.

Why aren't colors showing?

Make sure you've set the keynote file in Revit first (Annotate → Keynote → Keynoting Settings → Browse). Then click "Reload From File" in the Bnotes plugin. The plugin needs to know which file Revit is using to detect keynote usage correctly.

Keynote tags show "?" after opening a cloud project

This happens when Revit loads faster than Desktop Connector can sync the cloud keynote file. Open Bnotes — the ⟳ Refresh button will turn orange as a prompt. Click it and Bnotes will re-point Revit's keynote table to the fully-synced local file. Tags will resolve immediately.

Can I use my existing keynote file?

Yes! Bnotes works with any standard Revit keynote file (tab-delimited .txt format). Just point Revit to your file and open the plugin.

The project was set up with a keynote file from someone else’s computer that I can’t access. The tags still show the right text in Revit, but the file path is broken. What do I do?

Open Bnotes → expand the File drawer at the top of the right panel → click Save Project Keynotes As…. Bnotes reads the keynote entries Revit currently has in memory (these stay alive inside the .rvt even when the original file path is unreachable), writes them to a new .txt file at the location you pick, and automatically re-points Revit’s keynote table at your new local copy. After that the tags keep displaying the same descriptions, and you can edit normally with Save & Apply to Revit. For team workflows, save the exported file to a shared cloud location (Autodesk Docs / Forma / BIM 360) so everyone on the project resolves the same path.

What if I accidentally delete a keynote?

Don't worry! Changes aren't saved until you click "Save & Apply to Revit". If you haven't clicked that button yet, just close the plugin and reopen it to discard changes.

Can multiple people use this on the same project?

Yes! When the keynote file is local, each person manages their own copy independently. When the keynote file is on a shared location (Autodesk Docs, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, SharePoint, Box) and the Revit model is workshared, Bnotes v2.0 adds automatic conflict prevention: it prompts you to Sync With Central on open, tracks who is currently editing via the Bnotes_ActiveUser project parameter, and warns you if another team member already has Bnotes open. When you close Bnotes, you choose whether to sync your changes back to central or close without syncing.

What is the Bnotes_ActiveUser parameter?

It’s a hidden project parameter that Bnotes uses to track which user currently has the keynote manager open. The first person to use Bnotes on a workshared project with a cloud-hosted keynote file will see a blue “Add Bnotes_ActiveUser Parameter” button — clicking it creates the parameter automatically (no manual shared-parameter setup needed). Once it exists, every team member benefits from the conflict-prevention flow. The parameter is invisible in schedules and the Properties palette; it only appears in Bnotes’s internal logic.

Does the worksharing lock apply when my keynote file is local?

No. The sync prompt and user-lock flow only activate when both conditions are true: the Revit model is workshared (central file) and the keynote .txt is hosted on a cloud or shared-sync folder (Autodesk Docs, BIM 360, Forma, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, SharePoint, or Box). If the keynote file is on your local drive, there’s no multi-user conflict risk, so Bnotes opens normally without any prompts.

Does it work with linked models?

The plugin detects keynotes in the current project only, not in linked models. This is by design to keep things simple and fast.

What's the "Parent Key (Edit or New)" field?

This field lets you move keynotes around. Type an existing parent key to move the keynote under that parent. Type a new key that doesn't exist, and the plugin will ask if you want to create it automatically.

How does the 30-day trial work?

Click "Start Free Trial" in the activation dialog inside Revit, enter your name and email, and a license key is generated and emailed to you instantly. The trial is locked to your machine — one trial per machine and per email address. After 30 days, click the Buy Now button at the top of this page to purchase a full license.

What happens if I'm offline or the server is down?

Bnotes caches your validated license locally for 7 days. If the server is unreachable, you'll keep working uninterrupted. A last-known-good record extends this grace period further. You'll only be prompted to re-validate when both the cache has expired and internet is available.

Is it fast with very large keynote files?

Yes. Bnotes is built to handle large standards files with thousands of keynotes smoothly — searching and scrolling stay responsive. Use the Collapse All tab for the lightest, tidiest view, then Expand All or open individual branches as needed.
